An agreement reached in New York could mark a historic turning point in the management and organization of the America’s Cup. The America’s Cup Partnership (ACP) was officially ratified on October 15, laying the foundations for a future in which the teams will no longer be just competitors but co-custodians of the most prestigious event in international sailing.

New governance

Until now, the America’s Cup has always followed a model in which the Defender controlled most aspects of the event’s structure, including the protocol, calendar, and commercial rights. With the creation of the ACP, this paradigm changes radically.

From now on, each team will have a seat on the partnership’s governance board, with voting rights proportional to their level of participation in the event. The board will appoint an independent management team responsible for overseeing the commercial, media, technical development, and innovation aspects. Finally, the America’s Cup – including all related races – will no longer be held every four years as it was until 1987 (with subsequent variations), but every two years, to ensure greater stability in planning, investment, and continuity. The ACP will become operational on November 1, 2025. In short, from now on we’ll no longer witness a “one-off event” reshaped each time, but a “long-term project” in which the teams are true partners and co-contributors to the growth and value of the America’s Cup.

America’s Cup 2027: Italy at the heart of change

The agreement signed in New York for the edition to be held in Naples in 2027 also directly involves Italian interests. The management of the site near Bagnoli and of the preliminary events will be under the supervision of the ACP, which will need to work closely with local Italian authorities. Italian teams, including Luna Rossa Pirelli—already a challenger—and possibly Alinghi, depending on the official decision regarding its participation, will have the chance to actively contribute to the event’s governance rather than being mere participants.

We expect a major turning point from the America’s Cup Partnership, which, for the first time in 147 years, promises teams that are not only rivals but also joint guardians of this extraordinary regatta. The challenge won’t be easy—it will be a path filled with risks and uncertainties to overcome: from ensuring transparent governance to balancing divergent interests, adapting the competition protocol, and meeting the tight registration deadline of October 31, 2025. For the great “people” of the America’s Cup—those who watch the races holding their breath and can recognize the sound of the wind before seeing the sails fill—the birth of the America’s Cup Partnership is not just an agreement among teams. It’s a promise. The promise of endless emotion.

Luduan 2.0, the Grand Soleil 48 owned by Enrico De Crescenzo, was the undisputed star of the 2025 Grand Soleil Cup—the 23rd edition of the event organized by Cantiere del Pardo in collaboration with the Circolo Nautico e della Vela Argentario. The yacht clinched first place overall in the All Sails category, capping off two unforgettable days of racing.

The 2025 Grand Soleil Cup took place in the stunning waters off the Argentario coast, set against the backdrop of Marina di Cala Galera, from May 23 to 25. The event once again proved its significance on both the Italian and international sailing scenes, bringing together nearly 40 Grand Soleil yachts for a weekend of spirited competition, a shared love for the sea, and the strong sense of community that has always defined the brand. And now the spotlight shifts to the next stop in the Adriatic, set for June 13–15 in Portopiccolo.

The 2025 Grand Soleil Cup: Race Highlights

On Saturday, the fleet took on a coastal course heading toward Giannutri: the race began with a light breeze of 2–3 knots and finished with over 20 knots of mistral on the return leg, offering a technical and thrilling sail. On Sunday, the Grand Soleil Cup 2025 racecourse delivered perfect conditions for windward-leeward races, with wind building from 6 to 15 knots and one of the most scenic tacking moments near the Formiche di Grosseto.

During the closing ceremony of the 2025 Grand Soleil Cup, Marcello Veronesi, CEO of Cantiere del Pardo, and Marco Carletto, CEO of the Oniverse Group, reaffirmed the group’s strategic commitment to build quality, the development of new models, and increasingly tailored services for Grand Soleil owners. They also emphasized their goal of strengthening the international community that makes this brand truly unique.

One of the standout moments of this year’s event was the official debut of the new Plus Line, represented by four models: the GS Plus 72 Performance SHANTI, the brand-new GS Plus 65 Performance RIBELLE, freshly launched, and two GS Plus 65 Long Cruise models, HALIMEDE and MELIGUNIS. Also notable was the presence of four GS 44 yachts—recently awarded “Boat of the Year”—and crews from Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, and Canada, confirming the brand’s growing global reach.

But the Grand Soleil Cup isn’t just about racing. The onshore program also offered moments of connection and celebration in a truly distinctive atmosphere—from the elegant welcome cocktail on the CNVA terrace, to toasts at the dockside pasta party, the Saturday sunset dinner, and Sunday’s closing cocktail. The event was a perfect showcase of the strong social spirit that unites Grand Soleil owners, crews, and sailing enthusiasts.

It was “No Regret,” the ICE 52 owned by Egidi Felice of the Yacht Club Parma, that claimed first place in the ORC category during the prestigious Tre Golfi regatta, held from May 16 to 18 in the Gulf of Naples.

The ICE 52 No Regret literally dominated the ORC Class 0 in this 70th edition of the Tre Golfi Sailing Week 2025, thanks to a crew that skillfully tackled the challenges of a course winding through the waters of Naples, Sorrento, and Capri, amid breathtaking scenery and variable weather conditions.

On board the ICE 52 was also Roberto Spata, a prominent figure in Italian sailing, whose presence was a valuable addition to an already highly qualified crew. His experience and strategic skills were key in the tactical decisions made during the competition.

The 70th Tre Golfi Regatta saw the participation of 30 boats from six different nations, underlining its status as a major event on the international sailing calendar. Organized by the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia, in collaboration with the Yacht Club Italiano and the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia, the event was supported by prestigious partners such as Rolex, Loro Piana, and North Sails.

The weather conditions presented a mix of challenges, with light but steady winds that tested the crews’ technical skills. The Race Committee managed the starts and courses with professionalism, ensuring exciting and well-balanced competitions.

The victory of “No Regret” not only confirms the excellence of the crew and the yacht but also helps strengthen the reputation of the Yacht Club Parma in the offshore racing scene. A success achieved in a highly competitive context, where every detail can make the difference between victory and a spot on the podium.

Charlie Dalin has won the 10th “Vendée Globe” and set a new record: 64 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes, and 49 seconds, beating the previous record set by Armel Le Cléac’h by an impressive 9 days. Le Cléac’h had completed this prestigious solo, non-stop, and unassisted round-the-world race in 74 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes, and 46 seconds.

Charlie Dalin, the winner of the Vendée Globe

Born in Le Havre on May 10, 1984, Charlie Dalin graduated from the University of Southampton with a degree in Naval Architecture. Reviewing the results of his races in both solo and crewed disciplines, it’s rare to find him finishing outside the top three. In fact, even in the previous 2020/2021 Vendée Globe edition, he finished second, right behind Frenchman Yannick Bestaven. During that race, Dalin covered the 45,000 kilometers (24,300 nautical miles) around the world in 80 days, 6 hours, 15 minutes, and 47 seconds, achieving the fastest time for that ninth edition. It may seem odd that Dalin only placed second despite having the best time, but this was because Yannick Bestaven, who crossed the finish line third at Les Sables d’Olonne, was awarded a 10-hour time bonus for participating in a rescue operation. Kevin Escoffier had been in distress approximately 840 nautical miles southwest of the Cape of Good Hope when Yannick Bestaven, sailing nearby, assisted his fellow countryman.

vendée globe 2024

The absolute world record – set during the 8th edition of the Vendée Globe in 2016/17 by Frenchman Armel Le Cléac’h in 74 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes, and 46 seconds – has now been shattered by Charlie Dalin, who circumnavigated the globe in an incredible 64 days … hours … minutes, and … seconds. As skipper of IMOCA Macif Santé Prévoyance, Dalin was the favorite from the start, but his competitors didn’t make it easy. Fellow French sailors Yoann Richomme and Sébastien Simon kept close on his heels in a thrilling head-to-head battle, particularly with Richomme. Dalin even rounded Cape Horn leeward of Richomme’s IMOCA Paprec Arkéa. However, after crossing the equator, Dalin steadily increased his lead over Richomme and navigated the final stretch of the Atlantic with a level of confidence and ease that made it look like he was “playing at home.”

With this victory, Charlie Dalin triumphs over the 40 competitors, a number reduced to 34 after several withdrawals. Maxime Sorel, Louis Burton, Szabolcs Weöres, Pip Hare, Yannick Bestaven, and Eric Bellion were forced to withdraw from the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe due to technical issues. Yoann Richomme is expected to finish in second place in approximately 12 hours.

The only Italian in the race, Giancarlo Pedote from Florence, is currently in 20th place, 4,673 miles from the finish line.

The 10th Vendée Globe, the prestigious solo, non-stop, and unassisted round-the-world race, is in full swing, and the leading trio has already crossed the “midpoint” of the course. On November 10, 40 boats set sail from Les Sables-d’Olonne on France’s Atlantic coast, and as of today, 36 remain in the race. The 2024 edition is characterized by superlatives.

One of this year’s highlights is the race’s speed, breaking record after record. French sailor Charlie Dalin, currently leading alongside Yoann Richomme, smashed the 16-year-old record for the leg from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Leeuwin in Australia. Michel Desjoyeaux, the only two-time Vendée Globe winner, completed this route in 10 days and 7 hours back in 2008. Charlie Dalin took only 9 days and 22 hours, beating his compatriot’s time by 9 hours and 10 minutes. German competitor Boris Herrmann also surpassed the previous record with a time of 10 days and 1 hour, as did Sébastien Simon with 10 days and 6 hours. Simon also set a new solo 24-hour distance record in late November, covering 615.33 nautical miles at an average speed of 25.64 knots.

The three French sailors, Charlie Dalin, Sébastien Simon, and Yoann Richomme, are currently leading the race. Charlie Dalin has held the top position for most of the competition, with Yoann Richomme joining the trio only about ten days ago. Dalin and Richomme passed “Point Nemo” (the most remote location from any land on Earth) within sight of each other—a remarkable feeling in such a solitary place, 2,688 kilometers from the nearest landmass. Even the International Space Station (ISS) is closer to Earth than this spot! Remarkably, “Point Nemo” was also reached in record time.

vendée globe nemo

In 2016, Armel Le Cléac’h won the Vendée Globe in 74 days and 3 hours. This year’s leading trio has already passed the famous milestone much faster than the champion did eight years ago. Yoann Richomme, one of the three French skippers, recently shared on social media: “The three of us decided to have a speed race in the middle of the Pacific. We wanted to see who had the fastest boat. Unbelievable!”.

Another standout feature of this year’s race is the skippers themselves. Both French sailor Damien Seguin and Chinese competitor Jingkun Xu have an amputated arm, showcasing incredible determination. Meanwhile, 23-year-old French sailor Violette Dorange is the youngest female participant in Vendée Globe history. She is currently in 25th place, sailing bravely aboard the former boat of French veteran Jean Le Cam, who is also competing this year. There are six female skippers in this edition, matching the number in the previous race, although there were fewer participants overall in 2020.

Florentine sailor Giancarlo Pedote is the only Italian competing this year and the fifth Italian in the history of the Vendée Globe. In mid-November, he briefly held the lead but lost his position due to issues with his mainsail. In a social media video, he documented his 14-hour effort to sew up a tear approximately 4 meters long. Exhausted and drenched in sweat amidst the chaos of his cockpit, Pedote declared with a smile, “…but we always stay positive!” In recent days, the Italian skipper has worked on his sail once again and is currently in 19th place.

BI Teams

However, Pedote’s sail issue is among the minor damages seen so far in this race. French skipper Maxime Sorel suffered a severe ankle injury while on the mast of his IMOCA Monbana Mayenne and withdrew from the race just five days after the start. Such an early elimination is unprecedented in the history of this extraordinary competition. Shortly after, Louis Burton, third in the last Vendée Globe, also withdrew. He had discovered cracks in his boat‘s hull during the second week of the race, but ultimately retired due to damage to the forestay attachment near the Cape of Good Hope. By mid-December, both English sailor Pip Hare and Hungarian competitor Szabolcs Weöres had officially dropped out. Weöres, who had been trailing the fleet after an initial repair near the Canary Islands, recently discovered a broken shroud, compromising the lateral stability of his upper mast. Meanwhile, 50-year-old Pip Hare was left devastated by the dismasting of her boat. Overwhelmed with sadness, she announced, “This is the end of our race”.

German skipper Boris Herrmann also faced serious challenges at sea but managed to avert a dangerous situation. The Hamburg-based sailor reported that during the night of December 22–23, his Malizia-Seaexplorer tipped dangerously onto its side, nearly capsizing.

Another notable feature of this year’s race is the exclusion zone around the South Pole, which has already been adjusted five times. This boundary limits how far south skippers can sail to avoid collisions with ice in the Southern Ocean.

Vendée Globe 2024 has proven to be particularly extreme so far. With dramatic twists, intense head-to-head duels, and technical challenges, this race once again demonstrates why it is considered the pinnacle of ocean racing.

The start of the Vendée Globe told by Alessandra Peparini, skipper for Greenpeace.

Today, with relatively calm seas and light winds, the 40 skippers – including six women – have set sail from Les Sables d’Olonne. In the coming weeks, they will compete in one of the most challenging races in the world: the Vendée Globe.

Often called the “Everest of sailing,” the Vendée Globe is a solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world race, passing the three legendary capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin, and Cape Horn) for a total of around 45,000 kilometers.

Representing Italy is 48-year-old sailor Giancarlo Pedote, participating in his second edition of the Vendée Globe. Pedote previously competed in the 2020 edition, finishing in an excellent position and, notably, with his boat in pristine condition.

In his interview, Pedote shared his longing to relive those intense emotions and “breathe in that unique air” found only in the southern oceans. He explained that his choice to reuse the same boat was also driven by ecological reasons, a point highlighted by the Vendée Globe organizers as well.

Indeed, the President has stated that, for the 10th edition of this event, even the village hosting the race has been designed to have a low environmental impact and to raise awareness, especially among younger generations, about the urgent need to protect our oceans and our planet.

The Vendée Globe thus aspires to be a platform for innovation and research, offering an invaluable opportunity to observe the oceans and gather scientific data from one of the most remote parts of our planet: the majestic seas of the great south.

A powerful and important message, then, shared by the teams, skippers, and the organizers: to protect the oceans.

The atmosphere along the docks and among the stands is incredible; in France, sailing is deeply cherished, and Vendée Globe sailors are seen as heroes of the open sea, both for adults and especially for children.

Speaking of youth, we can’t overlook Violette Dorange, who, at just 23 years old, is the youngest participant in history. Although somewhat reserved when it comes to interviews and public appearances, the French sailor has quickly won the hearts and support of fans. Naturally, we made sure to send her our best wishes as well.

Alongside Violette are five other female skippers (Samantha Davies, Pip Hare, Justine Mettraux, Isabelle Joschke, Clarisse Crémer), making this Vendée Globe a landmark event with the highest number of women competing, promising us some incredible moments.

And on the theme of equality, resilience, and accessibility in the sport of sailing, we are impressed by the story of Chinese skipper Jingkun Xu. At 35, he’s competing despite a significant left-arm amputation he suffered at twelve due to a firework accident. Undoubtedly, he will face more challenges than able-bodied sailors, yet his participation sends a strong and inspiring message. Well done, Jingkun, and kudos to the other competitors with physical disabilities who, by joining this edition, prove that determination and passion for a sport can overcome any physical or mental barrier.

Since the first edition launched in 1989, technology has made great strides, and with it, both materials and boat profiles have evolved. So, while the class remains the same, the performance of the boats in this tenth edition of the Vendée Globe will be significantly different. Success will depend not only on the skill of the skippers but also on their strategic choices, determining who will ultimately come out on top. For thousands of French fans, however, they are all winners—for the courage of their undertaking and for the dreams they inspire in so many spectators.

Fair winds to all!

Alessandra Peparini

Ice Yachts triumphed at the 56th edition of the Barcolana, held last Sunday, October 13, in the Gulf of Trieste. The world’s most crowded sailing regatta saw the Salvirola-based shipyard claim first place in its class and third overall, with the boat helmed by the “Nice Fiamme Gialle” team. This prestigious result is the outcome of months of preparation, dedication, and passion from the entire team, which faced the challenges of such a renowned competition with great skill and team spirit, as well as thanks to the exceptional performance of Ice Yachts’ laboratory boat. “This is a historic racing boat that we refitted and use as a test platform for new materials and to expand our presence in regattas, aiming to reach new markets – commented Marco Malgara, CEO of Ice Yachts, who celebrates this great victory as a significant image boost for his shipyard.

It was a great race, and the team performed extraordinarily well – Malgara continued. – Participating in the Barcolana is an incredibly exciting experience, and winning it is even more so. It is the world’s top sailing event, with an incredible number of boats”. Barcolana 2024 saw the participation of 1,757 boats and thousands of sailors from around the world. The variable weather conditions made the competition even more thrilling, with winds testing the navigation and strategy skills of every crew. Despite the challenges, the “Nice Fiamme Gialle” team demonstrated great resilience and readiness, surpassing fierce competitors.

NICE

For Ice Yachts, Barcolana 2024 marked the beginning of our collaboration with the Fiamme Gialle – Malgara emphasized – Almost by chance, while talking with the general command, which was looking for something special for the final event of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the Guardia di Finanza, a joint venture was born. This led us to create a dream team that worked together as if it were a single entity. This allowed us to achieve an extraordinary performance. The pressure was sky-high, but we managed to deliver the best possible result”.

The entire team, supported by Brigadier General Antonio Appella and Marco Malgara, expertly managed the various phases of the regatta. Technical preparation and team cohesion were key elements that contributed to this success. The choice of maneuvers, optimization of trajectories, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing wind conditions made all the difference. As helmsman Paolo Cian explained: “The team was stellar; every decision we made was the right one, and we managed to push the boat to its maximum potential. I must congratulate my crew. For me, it was easy to lead the race because, thanks to all these Olympic sailors who can instantly understand what the boat needs, I simply focused on steering while they made the boat perform at 110%”.

The “Nice Fiamme Gialle” team is already looking ahead, with plans to participate in new competitions and continue growing in the sailing world in collaboration with Ice Yachts. Barcolana 2024 was a formative experience that strengthened the bonds among team members and paved the way for new opportunities.

A one-of-a-kind event followed by sailing enthusiasts and beyond, where young and determined crews battled it out to the last mile. In the end, the English crew came out on top, but everyone will remember a healthy and thrilling competition. We are talking about the Innovative Sailing World Championship in Porto Rotondo, an event promoted by the Department of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Commerce of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, which took place last weekend and featured teams from all over the world, competing in a team race format.

The Innovative Sailing World Championship highlights often overlooked but now essential topics, such as the continuous search for cutting-edge solutions that align with sustainability principles. The Porto Rotondo Yacht Club, always a forerunner of social, sports, and cultural initiatives based on innovation and environmental respect, meticulously planned every detail, aiming to do something different with the team race format, similar to the match race we’re watching these days with the America’s Cup, but instead of one-on-one, it was two-on-two. In addition to the sport competition, there were many interesting side events, including the Blue Village, which served as a platform for discussion among key players and leaders in technological research, including universities and startups.

Results of the Innovative Sailing World Championship

On the racecourse in front of the Porto Rotondo Marina, England claimed the title of the Innovative Sailing World Championship, fighting the final race against Poland, which had fiercely and effectively managed all phases leading up to the final. The young English crew showed their combative spirit from the outset, demonstrating a high level of experience in this type of competition, consistently managing to turn the team strategy in their favor.

The final standings of the Innovative Sailing World Championship saw Ireland in third place and Brazil in fourth. The Italian crew did not make it to the podium but still achieved an impressive result: the helmsmen on both boats were the youngest in the fleet, yet despite this, they showed they could compete with their older and more experienced counterparts. The young sailors, Giorgio Nocella (12 years old) and Riccardo Gessa (13 years old), displayed great sportsmanship and the tenacity essential for racing. They received a prestigious award from Olympic champion Marta Maggetti.

Nocella and Gessa can be considered sailing prodigies, both boasting an impressive sailing résumé despite their age. Moreover, Giorgio Nocella had already been awarded as the youngest sailor on the crew that won the RS21 Under-23 World Championship, indicating bright prospects for the Sardinian team, Nox Oceani.

A confirmation for the Porto Rotondo Yacht Club

The organization of the Porto Rotondo Yacht Club proved to be excellent for the Innovative Sailing World Championship, handling all the logistical and technical aspects. The club also served as a central hub for crews, federal technicians, and the many staff members involved in the sea and land operations that such an event requires.

The awards ceremony for the Innovative Sailing World Championship took place in the square in front of the Yacht Club, with notable attendees such as the Sardinian Regional Tourism Minister Franco Cuccureddu, the president of the FIV Third Zone Corrado Fara, and Count Luigi Donà dalle Rose, the founder of Porto Rotondo. The Yacht Club’s leadership expressed satisfaction with the successful organization and committed to repeating the event in 2025.
