Two premieres in a single test: the new Idea 100, flagship of the Italian shipyard Idea Marine, and the first pair of Honda BF350 engines in their brand-new and eye-catching Sporty White finish. A double debut that immediately grabs attention: on one hand, a boat that takes the brand’s livability and build quality to the next level; on the other, the new 5-liter V8 engines that promise outstanding performance with the technical elegance that has always defined Honda Marine. Put them together, and the result is a combination that blends substance, speed, and comfort in perfect harmony.

Idea 100 and Honda BF350 on test

During the test, the sea isn’t exactly calm: a long swell from the southwest and slightly choppy to rough waters—ideal conditions to really understand how a boat behaves. As soon as we step aboard and start the engines, the two Honda BF350s reveal their character right away: the V8 sound is deep but never intrusive, controlled and refined. Each weighs about 350 kg, and their power-to-weight ratio says a lot about their sporty nature.

The Idea 100, with its 10.20 meters in length and 3.05-meter beam, sets off decisively yet smoothly. At idle, around 1,200 rpm, the speed is 6 knots, and the boat glides effortlessly over the water, maintaining trim and stability even in waves. Pitching is minimal, rolling almost nonexistent—a sign of a well-balanced hull and a design focused on safe, comfortable navigation even when the sea isn’t perfect. But it’s only when pushing the throttles forward that we truly grasp the potential of this pairing. Acceleration is smooth and progressive: the boat gets up on plae at just 10–11 knots, an excellent result for a cruiser weighing over five and a half tons. The thrust from the two Hondas is powerful yet controlled, with consistent, uninterrupted delivery. At 22 knots, we hit the first ideal cruising speed: moderate fuel consumption, balanced trim, low noise, and onboard comfort reminiscent of a larger yacht.

honda BF350

Then comes the moment to push it further: throttles down, the engines rev higher, and the Idea 100 accelerates effortlessly. 30 knots, 35, 38, 40… up to 46.7 knots at 6,200 rpm. An impressive performance for a cruiser, proving just how well the hull performs even at high speeds—always stable and precise in its responses. We slow down and settle at around 30 knots, the second perfect cruising speed: at this pace, fuel consumption stays around 48 liters per hour per engine, an absolutely convincing figure for two 350-horsepower V8s.

Turning maneuvers complete the picture: at 30 knots, with the wheel hard to port, the boat leans decisively but with total safety. The hull cuts through the water effortlessly, slicing through waves with ease, and the grip in turns is impeccable. When countersteering, the heel angle is significant but always under control, confirming a precise and predictable response. It’s clear: this Idea 100 not only handles the power of the two Honda BF350s with ease but fully harnesses it, delivering a mature, dynamic, and reliable seagoing performance.

The Idea 100 in detail

With a length of 10.20 meters and a maximum beam of 3.05 meters, the new Idea 100 falls into the mid-sized sporty cruiser segment, but once on board, it feels more like a larger yacht. The first impression is of a sturdy, well-built boat where nothing is left to chance. Surfaces are generous and well laid out, with careful attention to ergonomics and smart solutions that make the most of every available centimeter.

At the stern, there’s a large sunbed of about 6 square meters, beneath which lies a spacious technical locker. Access to the stern platform is comfortable and safe, and the aft area can be configured with modular sofas (for 8 to 10 guests), perfect for socializing at anchor.

The high, well-protected gunwales ensure safety even for children, while the side decks provide easy access to the bow, where another large sunbed completes the exterior layout. The quality of the finishings—typically Italian—is evident in the attention to detail: polished stainless steel, premium upholstery, and top-tier marine components. Two large side windows and six portholes flood the interior with natural light, creating a surprisingly spacious and bright atmosphere for a boat in this category.

The layout is designed to suit different uses—from day outings with friends and family to medium-range cruising. And thanks to the outboard configuration, maintenance remains simple.

Below deck, the Idea 100 embodies the shipyard’s philosophy: making the most of every inch to offer comfort and functionality without sacrificing design. The interiors, crafted with quality materials and light finishes, are divided into two separate areas—a private owner’s cabin and a convertible dinette forward. When converted, the forward cabin provides a spacious and comfortable queen-size bed. There’s plenty of storage, carefully finished surfaces, and abundant natural light coming through the side windows, creating an airy, open feel.

The aft cabin, on the other hand, offers two berths, for a total of four sleeping places—an ideal setup for families or couples who enjoy spending several days on board. Midships, the bathroom with a separate shower is a remarkable feature for a boat of this size: spacious, well-finished, and practical. Ventilation is excellent, and the overall feeling is that of a boat designed for comfortable, no-compromise cruising. The interior atmosphere recalls that of a compact suite: soft lines, no sharp edges, and lighting designed to create a cozy, relaxing mood both day and night.

Sixty years of experience in marine propulsion with an eye always on the future. That’s how FPT Industrial presented itself at the 2025 Genoa International Boat Show, showcasing not only its high-speed diesel engines but also the new EBS 37 EVO battery pack, the company’s first fully electric product dedicated to the marine sector. “Our roots go back to historic brands like Iveco and Iveco Aifo – explains Alessandro Mor, Product Manager at FPT Industrial – and today we continue to build on this motor heritage, which the market still highly values”.

FPT Industrial, engines between automation and craftsmanship

The brand’s strength lies in its ability to combine advanced industrial processes with artisanal attention to detail. “All our engines are built at our Turin plant, on dedicated work islands rather than a standard assembly line – says Mor – This allows us to blend automation with the specific care required for the marine sector”.

This is an approach that makes a difference: on one hand, cutting-edge production technologies; on the other, the customization needed in a market like the marine industry, where every application has its own unique requirements. Every engine undergoes 100% hot testing and receives a special paint treatment to ensure resistance to salt spray—a crucial step to guarantee performance and durability both in yachting and in professional applications. A final visual inspection completes the process before shipment.

FPT genoa boat show

Diverse markets and segments

Versatility is one of FPT Industrial’s destinctive traits. From the 9-liter engine—available in versions for yachting or heavy-duty applications—to 1,000-horsepower units, FPT covers a wide range of needs: yachts, sport fishing boats, passenger transport, pilot boats, and government vessels. “We also collaborate with the Italian Guardia di Finanza and several international police forces – notes Mor – because sturdiness and reliability are essential even in the most demanding operational missions”.

Geographically, the company continues to see Europe as its main market but is strongly expanding toward North America, Latin America, and Asia. “In Alaska, Seattle, and New England, our engines thrive – he adds – There, fishing and sport fishing demand maximum power and reliability. In South America, we have a presence in Argentina, while in Asia we also work with government bodies in China and India”.

FPT Industrial: technology, services, and sustainability

Technological innovation has been a real game changer. “Common rail systems have revolutionized engines, bringing greater efficiency and performance”, recalls Mor. Today, this is complemented by connected services: thanks to telematics, yacht owners and institutional clients can monitor data and consumption in real time, enabling predictive maintenance. “With a GSM modem, all data are sent to a control room, allowing fleet managers to keep everything under control—from fuel consumption to potential alerts”, explains Mor.

The path toward sustainability is enriched by tangible projects. Through its partnership with the One Ocean Foundation, FPT has helped replant Posidonia seagrass in Sanremo; and together with the Tethys Institute, it has repowered the research vessel used for studying cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary. On the fuel front, FPT engines are already compatible with HVO, a biofuel capable of reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 90%, although widespread infrastructure remains a challenge. “The technology is ready, but we need a widespread network to support its adoption”, emphasizes Mor. In the meantime, FPT continues to develop hydrogen and multifuel gas solutions—often ahead of market availability.

detail

Toward hybrid and electric propulsion

Alongside its traditional engines and the new auxiliary range for megayachts, FPT is investing heavily in hybrid technology. “We’ve developed compact parallel systems capable of operating in three modes: fully electric, internal combustion with recharging, or combined”, explains Mor. This technology has already been tested on some demo boats, such as the Venice laboratory vessel.

FPT Industrial enters marine electrification

It’s within this evolution that the big news from the 2025 Genoa Boat Show comes in: the EBS 37 EVO battery.

“Launched at the beginning of 2025, it’s our first battery designed specifically for marine applications”, says Danilo Testa, Marketing Product Manager at FPT Industrial. “It’s the natural outcome of years of experience in the on-road segment, where between 2018 and 2024 we sold around 20,000 units, including batteries and electrified systems. This experience allows us to offer the marine sector a mature, tested, and reliable product”.

The EBS 37 EVO is modular, features high energy density, and can power both fully electric and hybrid vessels, in either parallel or serial configurations. It’s ready for use on recreational boats up to 24 meters, with a clear competitive advantage: “Within our group,” Testa highlights, “we can offer a competitive cost and a Battery Management System developed directly by FPT—the technological core that enhances performance and safety. The BMS is essentially the brain managing each battery, and it’s crucial that it’s designed and built alongside the pack itself”.

A clear strategy

Sustainability isn’t just a marketing choice—it’s a strategic driver. “We’ve been leaders in the on-road natural gas segment for years”, concludes Testa. “The marine challenge is simply the next step in our journey toward zero-emission mobility”.

With increasingly efficient engines, new hybrid solutions, and a decisive move into electric propulsion, FPT Industrial confirms its role as a key player in the energy transition within the yachting industry, while staying firmly rooted in Italian engine-building tradition.

Honda Marine Europe has as announced the arrival on the European market of the new generation of 4-cylinder and V6 outboard engines, completely renewed in terms of design, technology, and performance, and available at European dealerships starting from the early months of 2026.

The updated models include the BF115, BF135, and BF150 series for the 4-cylinders, and the BF200, BF225, and BF250 ranges for the V6s, which will make their debut at major European boat shows, including Hiswa te Water, Cannes Yachting Festival, Genoa International Boat Show, and Southampton International Boat Show.

New design and colors

BF350 Sporty White

Among the most notable updates is the introduction of the Sporty White finish, available alongside the classic Aquamarine Silver and Grand Prix White. The style follows the lines of the BF350 V8, ensuring a modern, elegant, and consistent look across the entire range.

Advanced technology and onboard comfort

The new outboards integrate solutions already introduced on the V8, such as the drive-by-wire system, now equipped with automatic trim, tilt, and cruise control functions. They are compatible with the latest 7-inch HD operational displays, which offer improved visibility and new features compared to the previous HD-4 and HD-5.

Onboard, the controls have been redesigned with ergonomic multifunction panels, more visible neutral indicators, and new, larger, and more intuitive control levers.

Honda Marine internal updates

Honda has introduced numerous improvements:
Optimized combustion chamber for more efficient combustion and more consistent performance;
Reinforced starter motor with stronger mounts and new seals for reliable starts every time;
Updated ECOmo system, which improves fuel efficiency across a wider operating range;
New redesigned midsection and optimized O₂ sensor to reduce operating costs and increase time on the water.

As per tradition, the engines include Honda’s proprietary technologies: BLAST™ (Boosted Low Speed Torque), which enhances acceleration at low speeds, VTEC® (Variable Valve Timing & Electronic Control), for smooth power delivery and greater efficiency, and PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection), which ensures quick starts, immediate throttle response, and low fuel consumption.

Greater durability and easier maintenance

Honda has also placed strong emphasis on reliability and practicality, with the use of new seals and improved water drainage to reduce corrosion, ensuring longer maintenance intervals thanks to iridium spark plugs and optimized valve adjustments. The oil filter and bypass system have been positioned to simplify oil changes, and the transducer bolts have been repositioned to speed up installation and testing.

Honda Marine, a strategy for the European market

According to Francesco Pichelli, Head of Sales at Honda Marine Europe, the new outboards represent a decisive step: “These updated models strengthen our commitment to the marine sector, offering innovative solutions that meet our customers’ needs for performance, comfort, and reliability. We want to reinforce our collaboration with shipyards and partners, offering complete and technologically advanced configurations”.

Selva Black Bass 8 and Tender VIB 270

A tender and an outboard are two essential accessories on board any boat. In this sea trial, carried out in the waters of Sardinia, we testing a duo that impressed us right from the start: the Selva Black Bass 8 outboard engine and the Selva VIB 270 tender, both products of the Selva Marine family. A pairing that goes beyond the classic functions of a tender, allowing to explore more distant bays, reach new destinations without moving the mothership, and experience the sea with greater freedom.

Selva VIB 270: a compact and surprising tender

The Selva VIB 270 is 2.70 m long, with 43 cm tubes, and weighs just 26 kg. It is an extremely practical tender, distinguished by its high-pressure inflatable V-shaped keel: an innovative solution that offers the benefits of a V-shaped hull without the weight and bulk of a rigid keel. The build quality is excellent: five independent compartments (three in the tubes and two in the keel), strong fabrics, and well-finished details. The VIB 270 tender remained always in the water, towed for weeks, without showing any weakness. A behavior that confirms the quality of its design and materials.

Selva Black Bass 8: the lightest outboard in its class

The Black Bass 8 is a 165 cc single-cylinder, water-cooled engine, and at just 27 kg it is the lightest outboard in its category. This makes a real difference when handling it on board or mounting and dismounting it from the tender. The version we tested comes with electric start, a feature that eliminates the effort of the traditional pull cord: just turn the key, engage the gear, and you’re ready to go. The Black Bass 8 is also available with a long shaft, ideal for small sailboats or light craft, and in a robust work version, the Big Foot, with a reinforced lower unit for intensive use.

Selva Black Bass 8 and VIB 270 underway: stability, silence and emotions

Even at idle, the Black Bass 8 stands out for its quietness: water cooling reduces noise emissions and makes navigation extremely discreet. Maneuverability is excellent: the inflatable V-shaped keel allows for quick, precise turns, and the tender responds without hesitation. To get on plane, just one trick is needed: shift weight forward before accelerating. The result is immediate—within seconds the bow settles on the water and the boat moves fast and steady, even with two people on board.

We reached a top speed close to 15 knots, an impressive result for a tender of this size. The outboard’s power reserve is evident, as is the VIB 270’s ability to keep up: even in turns, even when crossing wakes, the tender stays dry, solid, and easy to handle. Transitioning from planing to displacement only requires smooth deceleration, preventing the stern wave from flowing back aboard. A simple maneuver that confirms the reliability and stability of this small but capable boat.

Range and freedom

The Black Bass 8 is powered by a separate fuel tank, ensuring greater range compared to traditional integrated-tank outboards. This translates into more time on the water, more range, and more freedom to explore without relying on the main boat. In three months of intensive use, we logged over 40 hours of navigation with the Black Bass 8.

With these exciting new releases, Honda Marine continues on its path of evolution. The launch of the BF350 wasn’t a final goal but rather a starting point and a turning point for the brand. The renewal project, first hinted at during the last Genoa International Boat Show, was confirmed at the 2025 Düsseldorf Boot Show with the introduction of the new BF300—a project developed over years of research and innovation by Honda in the marine sector, as we previously discussed in one of our articles.

Simpler and more efficient navigation—these are the two main focuses of Honda Marine’s research and development. The latest upgrades primarily enhance performance and controls. With the introduction of a new side-mounted Drive-By-Wire throttle and a new 7-inch multifunction display, managing all navigation functions is now easier than ever.

Honda Marine has also confirmed that these new models will feature Trim Support, Automatic Tilt, and Cruise Control, functions previously introduced on the BF350 and BF300. These innovations enhance onboard comfort and ensure the best possible navigation experience in all sea and wind conditions.

The sleek, completely updated design, combined with a compact build, adds a touch of elegance and modernity to the new Honda Marine engines. They will be available in two signature color options: the iconic Aquamarine Silver and the sporty Grand Prix White.

These new outboards will make their official European debut at the 2025 Genoa Boat Show in September, where visitors will also have the opportunity to test them on the water.

A new 300HP outboard engine, specifically designed for navigating the waters of the Mediterranean. Selva Marine presented the new 300 XSR “White Whale” at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024, a model that, as its name suggests, stands out for its large size and extreme power.

At the top of the Selva Marine outboard engine range, the 300 XSR differs from the traditional 300HP model due to the remapping of the engine control unit, a distinctive feature of the entire XSR line. “Essentially, the engine is identical to the classic version, but the control unit of the XSR models is remapped to facilitate use in the Mediterranean Sea, which has different characteristics from all other bodies of water”, explained representatives at the Selva Marine stand.

selva-marine-range

More specifically, the 300 XSR outboard offers better torque at low revs and delivers improved performance; most notably, it allows for fuel savings of up to 3-5 liters per hour, depending on cruising speed. This might not seem like much to occasional users, but it makes a significant difference for those using this product on boats intended for chartering with a skipper – the primary target audience for this engine. In the span of a month, the Selva Marine 300 XSR can save the amount a rental business owner would spend on a skipper’s salary, which undoubtedly makes a difference.

As mentioned above, the 300 XSR shares the same features as the classic 300HP version: it’s a 6-cylinder engine with a 60° V configuration, 24 DOHC valves, and a variable valve timing system. The 4169 cc cylinder is made using a plasma fusion process, ensuring incredible strength and lightness. With “Drive By Wire” electronic controls and a base weight of only 260 kg, it integrates the most advanced technologies available, offering unmatched performance and efficiency.

But there’s one last distinctive and exceptional feature of the 300 XSR: its propeller (photo above). The blades are not forged but feature grooves that significantly improve performance, setting this outboard engine apart from the competition. On the 300 XSR, the grooved propeller comes standard, while on other models in the range, it can be added as an optional upgrade. This innovation was also launched by Selva Marine at the Cannes Yachting Festival, and with its ongoing innovations, the company seems truly determined to capture an ever-growing share of the market.
